This morning I wanted to shortly evocate how my feeling of photography radically changed since I changed camera. The professional photographers will have read countless articles like this one, and I might not have anything new to add to the mix, just wanted to share my experience.
For those who are not familiar with my photography, I am a somewhat professional photographer, on my spare time, with limited professional gear and budget to do so. I do occasional photoshoots with amateur and semi-pro models, answer some freelance contracts when I’m offered some, and my favorite style is portrait.
Up until 2 months ago, I was shooting with a Canon 6D (full Frame CMos Sensor), and my lens kit comprises of an Eos 24-105L F4; a 50mm F1.8 and a Tamron 70-300mm F4. In December, I invested in a Fuji X-T2 (ASPC Sensor); a Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2; a Fujinon 35mm F2 WR and a Samyang 12mm F2.
Marcus (the name I gave to my X-T2) killed my 6D and ruined the experience of shooting with my pro DSLR for me. The first thing which surprised me is that shooting with it ‘Fun’. I always liked shooting, it feels good, but I never expected to have fun with it. It’s like having fun washing your hands. You don’t expect to. Secondly, the X-T2 is so compact, light and quality made, that suddenly my DSLR appears to me as a cheaply assembled bulky plastic tank. I took both of my cameras for a photoshoot Sunday. Needless to say, the 6D appeared completely useless, heavy and annoying. It is frustrating. Because 4 years ago, when I bought it, I spent a little fortune on it. I shot thousands of shots with it. And I loved it. And now, I can’t be bothered taking it with me.
There’s not a day I go out without my mirrorless now, it is my go-to camera at all times. It’s fast, weather sealed (the Canon is not), and light. The electronic viewfinder is stunning, the orientable screen is major feature. It’s nothing short of an amazing camera. I will try to take both my cameras one last time for a landscape shoot, somewhere in Scotland, soon. But selling the 6D, might just be what’s going to happen in the end.
‘The best camera is the one you have with you’. Well, my Fuji X-T2 is just that. All the time.

Ce matin je voulais évoquer la manière dont ma sensation quand à la photographie à radicallement évolué depuis que j’ai changé d’appareil photo. Les photographes auront déjà lu de nombreux articles similaires a celui ci, mais je voulais partager ma propre expérience.
Pour ceux qui se sont pas accoutumés à mes photos, je suis un genre de photographe, sur mon temps libre, avec un matériel pro réduit, et des moyens limités. Je fais de temps en tems des shooting avec des mannequins amateur/semi pro, je réponds de temps en temps à quelques contrats en freelance et mon style préféré est le portrait.
Jusqu’il y a 2 mois, je shootais avec un Canon Eos 6D (capteur plein format) et je disposais d’un Canon 24-105L F4, d’un 50mm F1.8 et d’un tamron 70-300 F4. En décembre j’ai investi dans un Fuji X-T2 (capteur ASPC), et des objectifs: Fujinon 56mm F1.2, 35mm F2 WR et un Samyang 12mm F2.
Marcus (le nom que j’ai donné a mon X-T2) à tué mon 6D et ruiné la sensation de shooter avec des reflex numériques pro. La première chose qui m’a surpris est d’avoir un vrai plaisir à prendre des photos au mirrorless. J’ai toujours eu du plaisir a shooter, mais je ne m’attendais pas à ce que soit ‘fun’. C’est comme trouver du fun a se laver les mains. On ne s’y attends pas. Ensuite, le X-T2 est si compact, léger, et construit de matériaux robustes, qu’en comparaison, mon reflex numérique passe pour un gros tank de plastique bon marché. J’ai pris les deux appareils photos pour un shoot dimanche, et évidemment le 6D est apparu completement inutile. Lourd, encombrant et même gênant, l’expérience était devenu frustrante. Car il y a 4 ans, quand je l’ai acheté, j’y ait investi une petite fortune. Et j’ai shooté des miliers de clichés avec. Et je l’ai adoré, cet appareil. Et maintenant je ne trouve plus de raisons de le prendre avec moi.
Il n’y a plus un jour sans que je sorte sans mon Fuji. Il est rapide, léger, résistant aux intempéries (le 6D ne l’est pas). Le viseur numérique est incroyable, l’écran orientable est un bonus crucial. Cet appareil n’est rien de moins que fantastique. J’essairai sans doute de prendre les deux appareils sur un shoot de paysage, en écosse, bientot, mais je crains que quoi qu’il en soit je vais finir par vendre mon reflex numérique.
‘Le meilleur appareil photo est celui que vous avec avec vous’. Et bien le Fuji X-T2 est tout simplement ça. Tout le temps.
